Chapter 16

I dreamt of Liam’s kiss. Another dream. So many fucking dreams while all I wanted was Liam in my arms. I couldn’t really feel him and needed him so badly it hurt. While I could see him, his movements stuttered, more like a recording on the fritz, than the real thing.

“Shh,” he whispered to me, his lips brushing across my cheeks as though he were kissing away tears. “I’m here.”

“I need you,” I told him.

“Yes,” he agreed, his arms wrapped around me feeling no more substantial than a memory. “You’re reckless without me.”

More like wrecked without him. “You’re the one who told the military you were a shifter,” I pointed out.

He gave me a wry smile. “I wondered how coherent you would be. But yes, I did so I could spin this. Then you did the whole giant glowing fox thing. That’s going to be a little harder to spin.”

“No one would help me. Everyone told me they wanted you dead.” I needed Liam alive. Needed him like the air I breathed.

He groaned sweetly. “I know, love. I need you too,” he said as though he heard what I felt. And maybe he did.

“I thought I’d come to you. That they would take me to where they had you.” For a few seconds it had been a good idea, though looking back I could see a thousand errors in that way of thinking.

“A few months’ time and I’ve already ruined your survival instinct. That’s on me,” Liam said. “If you’d gone home, I’d have followed soon.”

“There is no point in me surviving without you.” We had already had this discussion. I’d run across the country looking for a place to die only to find a home to give me life. I realized in that moment that I had a death wish before meeting Liam. Spent an entire year running into dangerous situations. Accidentally, of course, but most people didn’t just happen to be steered toward death by fate on a daily basis. It was meeting Liam that stopped me. Even when I’d tried to leave town, I hadn’t gotten far, dragged back by a broken-down car, an attack of rogue wolves, and the memory of a long-ago kiss. How was that normal?

“Fuck,” I said. “I’m stupid in love with you. Stupid in general, I guess.”

“Leave it to you to confess your love for me the first time in the middle of a life or death situation,” Liam grumbled. “Not to mention the whole stupid part…”

I blinked at him. “You said I was moon-eyed over you. I thought you knew.”

He nodded. “I do know. You show me how much you love me in little ways every day. Even if you refuse to admit to yourself that you do and worry about when you’ll have to run away. Now that you’re admitting it to yourself, perhaps our bond will finally work both ways.”

It did work both ways. My end of it sometimes fizzled. Which I was pretty sure was me. Maybe
