Chapter 16
I dreamt of Liamâs kiss. Another dream. So many fucking dreams while all I wanted was Liam in my arms. I couldnât really feel him and needed him so badly it hurt. While I could see him, his movements stuttered, more like a recording on the fritz, than the real thing.
âShh,â he whispered to me, his lips brushing across my cheeks as though he were kissing away tears. âIâm here.â
âI need you,â I told him.
âYes,â he agreed, his arms wrapped around me feeling no more substantial than a memory. âYouâre reckless without me.â
More like wrecked without him. âYouâre the one who told the military you were a shifter,â I pointed out.
He gave me a wry smile. âI wondered how coherent you would be. But yes, I did so I could spin this. Then you did the whole giant glowing fox thing. Thatâs going to be a little harder to spin.â
âNo one would help me. Everyone told me they wanted you dead.â I needed Liam alive. Needed him like the air I breathed.
He groaned sweetly. âI know, love. I need you too,â he said as though he heard what I felt. And maybe he did.
âI thought Iâd come to you. That they would take me to where they had you.â For a few seconds it had been a good idea, though looking back I could see a thousand errors in that way of thinking.
âA few monthsâ time and Iâve already ruined your survival instinct. Thatâs on me,â Liam said. âIf youâd gone home, Iâd have followed soon.â
âThere is no point in me surviving without you.â We had already had this discussion. Iâd run across the country looking for a place to die only to find a home to give me life. I realized in that moment that I had a death wish before meeting Liam. Spent an entire year running into dangerous situations. Accidentally, of course, but most people didnât just happen to be steered toward death by fate on a daily basis. It was meeting Liam that stopped me. Even when Iâd tried to leave town, I hadnât gotten far, dragged back by a broken-down car, an attack of rogue wolves, and the memory of a long-ago kiss. How was that normal?
âFuck,â I said. âIâm stupid in love with you. Stupid in general, I guess.â
âLeave it to you to confess your love for me the first time in the middle of a life or death situation,â Liam grumbled. âNot to mention the whole stupid partâ¦â
I blinked at him. âYou said I was moon-eyed over you. I thought you knew.â
He nodded. âI do know. You show me how much you love me in little ways every day. Even if you refuse to admit to yourself that you do and worry about when youâll have to run away. Now that youâre admitting it to yourself, perhaps our bond will finally work both ways.â
It did work both ways. My end of it sometimes fizzled. Which I was pretty sure was me. Maybe
